Tips

Set a list of priorities and expectation

• When does the job need to be done?

• What is your big picture goal?

Set a budget

• What is the scope of work you want to complete?

• What kind of tile do you want - what size? Do you want your ceiling tiled? Do you need a new bathtub/toilet?

• Do you want extras like heated floors/shower bench/extra/bigger wall niche/LED lights?

• Try not to forget little details like knobs, baseboards/trim - Does yourwindow or door need a replacement, etc?

Choose a colour pallette or design style

• Try to stay consistent with colour and material choices

• Choose options that are cohesive with the rest of the house

• What colour grouts or caulking which you want? Do you want it to blend in or stand out, etc?

Plan logistics

• Find out if the toilet needs to be plumbed - drain or shower valves can be reused (if possible)

• Check to make sure you can get all the material on time if you are shipping it to your house

• Line up a contractor or clear up your schedule

• Will the remodel require enough tear-out that you'll need to seal off other rooms from dust or noise?

• Do you need an area to cut tile and mix thin-set? Set up plywood on a sawhorse as a makeshift table to use as your workbench.

Anticipate obstacles

• Will the subfloor need to be replaced?

• Will the new tub fit through the door?

• Can the existing electrical be used?

• Will you need an inspector?

Create a timeline

• Make a list that follows a logical timeline

• Don't repain before caulking

• Don't finish the tile floor before installing the shower

Get creative

• Think outside the box for a unique look and feel 

• Look for unique lights and decoration

• Check websites/social media for inspiration and see if it's feasible
